This is a step by step process on how to deep clean face masks to stay healthy! Don’t rely on a washing machine to get this right. Your face masks harbors so much bacteria (and makeup), the fabric is bound to get clogged up quickly.
I mean, take a look at these pictures… I literally took them straight from the washing machine to the sink… They looked and smelled clean, but obviously they were still full of germs and gunk… DISGUSTING!

Deep cleaning your face masks is actually super easy. If you have ever tried laundry stripping, you already know where I am going with them.
If you haven’t heard about laundry stripping, check out this post!
BUT, you must clean your masks separately from other clothes. This is a different recipe than my laundry stripping recipe. Do not laundry strip your masks with anything else. You want as little cross contamination going onto your clean face masks as possible.
Here’s what you’ll need to deep clean face masks:
- 1 tbsp Powdered Tide (Tide works the best and do not use liquid)
- 1 tbsp Borax
- 1 tbsp Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
- Clean sink or bucket
If you know my laundry stripping recipe, you’ll notice that this one is slightly different. Instead of a 2:1:1 ratio, I do all equal parts. Because face masks are covering your nose, personally I do not like it when they smell too strongly of laundry detergent.
You will wash them again after stripping, but Tide has a stronger fragrance than what I find comfortable having directly on my nose… So I like to cut back on that in this case.
Here’s how to deep clean face masks:
Step 1:
Wash your masks like normal. If you want to wash them in a laundry bag with your normal load of laundry, now’s the time. Or you can wash them by hand. Either way, make sure you wash them to get out as many germs and dirt prior to deep cleaning your masks.
Step 2:
Disinfect the sink or bucket you plan to use. Do not skip this step! Your sinks and cleaning buckets harbor so much nastiness! You don’t to soak your masks in that stuff.
Step 3:
Next, fill your sink or bucket with hot water. The hotter the better. Then, combine all of the ingredient and stir the water until they dissolve. Put the masks in the water, and let them soak for 4 hours or until the water gets cold. Stir the water occasionally to ensure the cleaning agents are getting into all the nooks and crannies.
Step 4:
After 4 hours have passed, drain the water and thoroughly rinse the masks in warm water. Wring them out and begin hand washing them with your favorite laundry detergent or Dawn dish soap.
Once your face masks are dry, that all you need to do! Repeat this process every time you wash your face masks.
